Being in a different place implies dealing with different people and situations while not being fully independent. This dependence has to do with the little knowledge on the local customs, the language barrier and the fact that we don’t know anyone. When you don’t take the necessary measures before travelling abroad, you may find yourself in more than one awkward situation.
The menu is not always translated into our language, especially if you go to a local restaurant. You want to do a bit of research on what the traditional food is, how everything is called, and what the local customs are. Some places are very exotic when it comes to food, and we might not find it pleasant when we see we just ordered Criadillas –bull’s testicles- for dinner. We will wish we had taken Spanish classes Washington style.
Every major city has an ‘area to avoid’. However, in order to stay away from the unsafe spots, knowing where they are or what they are called is not enough. We might get confused on the public transport and take the bus that goes in the opposite direction…and wind up in some very bad neighbor. We have to be extra careful when taking the public transport abroad, especially if we are in a big city.
If you travel abroad at a complete loss as regards what the prices are, you might be the victim of a major rip off. Tourists have this ‘naïve’ vibe that some people find nice, but others will want to take advantage of. When taking a taxi, some drivers might want to charge you more than they should just because they hear the foreign accent and think they can take advantage of your not being familiar with the place.
When taking Russian classes New York students not only learn the technical aspects of the language but also the cultural background of the language. For travelling, they are mainly concerned about the etiquette: did you know that you should never show the soles of your shoes to Russians? This is considered very rude.
There are so many things to know before travelling, that you should never assume that you will be ok without knowing anything about the language of the culture.
